Mexico’s e-commerce market was growing fast ($18.8B in revenue) and installments had become a preferred way to pay, even for smaller purchases. But most plans were interest-free and fully funded by merchants, making longer repayment periods costly for them to sustain. This three-sided constraint across customers, merchants, and PayPal limited adoption and created an opportunity to rethink how installment costs were shared.

Opportunity
This presented an opportunity to rethink installments as a shared-cost model rather than a fully subsidized one. By allowing buyers to opt into paying part of the installment cost, merchants could offer longer tenures without absorbing the full financial burden. For PayPal, this unlocked a path to scale installment adoption while creating a sustainable revenue model.
Learnings
This project highlighted the complexity of designing financial experiences across multiple markets, regulatory environments, and organizational teams. It reinforced the importance of balancing localization with platform consistency, and demonstrated how strategic design decisions—when aligned across product, research, and engineering—can help drive adoption while supporting broader business goals such as expanding domestic transaction volume.

Learning
Designing financial products at platform scale requires balancing user behavior, merchant economics, and platform incentives. Beyond usability, the challenge was aligning trust, repayment clarity, and business viability across multiple stakeholders. The project reinforced how product design can shape marketplace economics, not just improve the interface.
